My main abstract argument is :Increasing tensions between the United States and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) seems to evolve into a contentious rivalry. China’s recent Belt & Road Initiative seeks to transform traditional alliances and businesses interests under such a global power competition. The main justification for this trajectory is China’s attempt to disrupt the western liberal order that has governed international order for decades. I argue that China’s approach to sovereign lending in developing countries is a means to gain support among these countries to influence international affairs and counter the United States and its Western allies. I employ several case analyses to demonstrate this logic.
