This course will provide students with an understanding of our contemporary media environment, with attention to both Irish and international examples. Students will learn about the operation of the media industries, and will gain the ability to critically assess both media texts and the structures that shape them. In particular, students will explore the structure of the mass media, and the social context within which they operate.

 

Learning objectives:

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

  • Understand/explain the differing mandates of public service, commercial, and community media, and the impact this has on media output.
  • Analyse the structures shaping our media environment, such as economic, technological, and regulatory constraints.
