A few years before his death in 2018, Stephen Hawking made this comment in a speech: “almost all of us must sometimes wonder: Why are we here? Where do we come from? Traditionally, these are questions for philosophy, but philosophy is dead. Philosophers have not kept up with modern developments in science. Particularly physics.” Based on this statement, Hawking seems to think that philosophy and science offer competing answers to the same questions and that scientific answers are on better ground. Drawing on the concepts we have discussed this semester, explain whether you agree with that view of the relationship between philosophy and science. If so, why? If not, what is a better way to think about that relationship?
