Consider George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead in your essay (1968). Remember that your review should contain precise reasons why the movie is successful, unsuccessful, or somewhere in between, not just a summary of the film or a statement about whether you enjoy it.

As you write your review, consider the individual cinematic components (director, writing, acting, editing, etc.). The movie must be referenced on a Works Cited page, along with one more outside review from a journal, magazine, website, or other source. Keep in mind that your final draft need to be 2-4 pages long (excluding the cover page), typed, and adhere to MLA formatting.

Overview

George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead premiered in theaters on October 1 of that year. Romero’s picture captures the civil turmoil of the 1960s, despite the fact that it was made at the end of the decade. Racial tension was still strong in the South at the time of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. earlier that year, and other small-scale local civil conflicts took occurred there.

The Vietnam War, which seemed to go on forever, was being fought by young Americans far away. The Allegorical Moment, or “a stunning collision of cinema, spectator, and history when registers of corporeal space and historical time are disturbed, addressed, and linked,” is discussed in Adam Lowenstein’s introduction to Shocking Representation.

The depiction of this “historical trauma” on television makes it difficult to distinguish between time and space, leading viewers to feel emotions that are akin to the sorrow that was first caused by the incident. Drawing from this “allegorical period,” George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead depicts the tragedy of the black soldier story during the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. As a result, the film gained a bigger black audience.

The movie has a warlike tone from the outset. As gloomy nondiegetic music instills a sense of foreboding, the camera moves along a twisting route. A meandering road’s aspect conjures up images of journey or distant lands. The activities that take place here seem to be isolated.
