1) As Lewis Porter states, Wynton Marsalis and Stanley Crouch, ″appear to believe that in order to be considered jazz, music must include the blues, improvisation, swing feel, and what they call ′the Latin tinge′.″ While such a definition has merit, discuss the adequacy of such a definition. Is it too narrow? Not narrow enough? Or is it a good working definition if not applied rigidly? 2) Based on this week′s video and audio assignments, as well as your reading assignments, discuss controversial aspects of fusion jazz (i.e., is it jazz?). Is some fusion more legitimate than others? If so, what makes some fusion more ″legit″?
