Task
The original Machiavellianism scale, where the list of 20 items has been taken and adapted for your own scale development project, is from Chapter 2 of the following book: Christie, R., & Geis, F. L. (1970). Studies in Machiavellianism. New York, NY: Academic Press.
In doing this assignment, you will need to undertake the following steps:
Review the concept of Machiavellianism by reading the starter readings on the Dark Triad (Machiavellianism, Psychopathy, and Narcissism):
Obtain a detailed and comprehensive definition of Machiavellianism from a range of sources- theory/ies, lay/dictionary definitions, journal papers using that construct
From this definition (and possibly existing scale development papers), derive the underlying domains/content areas associated with the construct
Address content and construct validity of the existing items by having them “expert” reviewed by one of your 3006PSY peers.
Describe the nomological net of your construct. Select the most appropriate construct from the IPIP Big 5 to test the construct validity of your scale. You will also need to select an appropriate measure of your chosen Big 5 construct to include in your survey.
Screen data and use item analyses to reduce the number of items for your scale to approximately 8 – 10 items
Assess the psychometric properties of your scale and critically compare to those of the initial scale you drew upon
Construct normative data for the scale, and
Write a report on the scale development and initial validation using APA format. Include (a) a critical review of the construct and existing measure, (b) your nomological net for your construct, and (c) indication of your final scale items in Appendices.
Think about the project occurring across two phases:
Phase 1 includes selecting and clarifying/defining the construct and purpose for your scale, addressing how you will assess validity, and undertaking relevant analyses to refine a final brief scale and provide evidence of its psychometric properties. This is supported week-by-week in tutorials from Weeks 2 – 8.
Phase 2 covers the write-up of the project. You will utilise your reading and the material obtained in Phase 1 to write up the project and be writing this as you go from Weeks 2 – 7. Week 8 tutorial will review writing a scale development paper.
Assignment Word Length
Your project must be reported within the word limit of 2250 words (counted from start of intro to end of discussion and including all data in tables). Title page, References, and Appendices will not be included in this word count. You are required to indicate an exact word count on the title page (providing an inaccurate word count will be considered academic misconduct). No material exceeding 2250 words will be read or marked.
Late submissions will be penalised by 5% of the total possible mark (i.e., 1.75 marks) per working day (from hand-in time – see table below). After 5 days, submissions will be marked as 0 (zero). Submissions of an empty template will be marked as non-submission meaning you will NOT be eligible for a supplementary exam if required.
Marking Criteria (worth 35%)
The project must be reported in APA style, 7th Edition. Your write-up should reflect the process of scale development, e.g., you should address all necessary processes in the development of a meaningful scale. Where it is not possible to carry out some aspect normally desirable for test construction (e.g., determining predictive validity), you should comment on this, and indicate how it might be achieved in future work with your scale.
Your assignment will NOT be judged on how “good” a scale you produce (e.g., that you create a scale with good or better psychometric properties than the existing one); rather, it will be judged on how well you show evidence that you have engaged in and understood the process of scale development and validation (i.e., how well you describe and justify the scale development process you engage in).
Marking Criteria
Describe and define machiavellianism in general. This will require you to identify the theoretical framework/s within which your construct (and scale) is situated, as constructs derive from and are defined by theory. You will need to ensure your definition covers the entire domain of your construct- i.e., all of the content areas contained within this construct. A simple “dictionary” or lay definition should be included but will not be enough on its own. Some wide reading on the definition of the construct will be needed so that a thorough review of the construct definition is provided.
Review of the Original Scales Used:
Briefly describe and review the existing scale. This must include evidence for the psychometric properties of the existing scales that you incorporate, a brief review of the target population, end-users, and purposes for which these were developed or have been used. This section should also indicate your target population, end-users, and scale purpose and how that is consistent with or different to those aspects for the original scales you are using. Some of this might be found within the reading mentioned in the document with 20 Machiavellianism items, but you will also be expected to read the papers that have subsequently used those items/scales
