INTRODUCTION & PURPOSE OF THE PRESENTATION

Adolescence is a critical transitional stage in life for all people with each experiencing it differently. Adolescents experience physiological and psychological changes that affect their perspectives on life. These effects can lead to emotional and mental health issues that affect their perspective and influence their decisions, sometimes negatively (Gargono et al., 2018). Adolescents at this stage are more susceptible to mood disorders that include depression and others (Marcal, 2021). The purpose of this presentation is to discuss key takeaways from the implementation of a parenting plan to mitigate mood disorder based on a case study of a female adolescent as described in the next slide. The presentation evaluates the overall critical points and evidence based on the case study and implementation of the subsequent interventions to address the issue.

Statement of the problem

A consideration of the statement of the problem gives one some key aspects that parents should address when their children transition during the adolescence stage. The first takeaway is that adolescents encounter a myriad of challenges that require them to get parental support. Secondly, the stability of the family is key to the ability of adolescents to transition at this time. However, dysfunctionality of the family can be a major source of emotional and behavioral health problems faced by adolescents. The current case shows insufficient parental care, involvement, and support from the family for the eighteen-year old adolescent girl (Yang et al. (2019). Therefor, it is essential for parents and other stakeholders to develop a plan of action based on evidence from existing literature on the subject area.

Summary of existing literature on mood disorders

Existing studies show that adolescents go through diverse emotional and mental health issues that impact their wellbeing. One in seven adolescents experience mental health issues like mood disorder (Alvarez-Subiela et al. (2022). These issues may lead to loneliness, anxiety and mood disorder. Again, another important takeaway is that mental issues in adolescence can persist into young adulthood and impact the individual in a profound manner. Secondly, family and social situations and environments have significant effects on the behaviors and actions of adolescents (Vellasco et al. (2020). The third takeaway is that the behavior of parents, actions and their parenting styles affect the conduct and actions of adolescents, including their encounter with psychological issues like mood disorders.

Summary of the literature

The studies show that behavioral and emotional challenges among adolescents are diverse and include depression and bipolar disorder. A key takeaway is that family history and dysfunctionality also affect mood disorders among adolescents. Secondly, the literature is categorical that girls are more susceptible to situations and family aspects that impact their moods and actions compared to boys (Lee et al., 2020). The implication is that parents must ensure that they work out issues that may cause dysfunctionality in these units to improve the health status of their adolescents, especially girls.

The theories and parenting styles show the critical role that parents play in development of their adolescents as they transition to adulthood. Therefore, parents should use an appropriate parenting style to support their children’s wellbeing. They must also understand the critical role that they play in the wellbeing of their children, especially their emotional support (Keijser et al., 2020). Mood disorders emanate from ineffective role models among parents. As demonstrated in the case study, divorce and eventual separation of parents have significant effects on children, especially girls.

Plan of action

The plan of action also provides vital takeaways during the project as it demonstrates the need for the two parents to have an effective parenting approach, perhaps co-parenting at this stage to help the girl navigate the current stage of growth and development. Secondly, the school counseling department and the management can be of immense help if they are also part of the interventions where they develop strategies to have the parents share their co-parenting plans to help the girl deal with her problem now (Colizzi et al., 2020). Support from the family including the assistance of the sister and the grandmother is very critical. The plan of action based on the case study is not only critical but also offers essential lessons of the parents to be part of their children’s overall development at adolescent stage.

The presentation offers critical takeaways that can help parents develop evidence-based interventions to help adolescents navigate the stage with limited emotional and behavioral issues
