  1. The steady-state process shown in Fig. 1 is used to extract oil from soybeans. The feed is 2.3 kg/min and contains 37% oil, 45% protein and 18% fibre. The stream of protein and fibre leaving the process contains 3.0% hexane. The recycle stream 4 from the oil recovery section has a flow rate of 7.4 kg/min. Pure hexane is used as solvent. Assume that the oil recovery section gives a perfect separation of hexane and oil. Assume that all the oil is extracted from the feed and that no protein or fibre is carried over into stream 3. All percentages are on a mass basis.

(a). Calculate the flow rate and composition of stream 2.

(b). Calculate the flow rate of stream 6.

(c). Calculate the flow rate of stream 5.

(d). Calculate the concentration of oil in the recycle stream 3.
