The Gullah people are direct descendants of enslaved West Africans, who were brought to America during the 18th century. The Gullah principally reside in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina and Georgia. As a result of their geographic isolation, they were successful in preserving major aspects of their African cultural heritage.
