The focus of this topic will be to learn to recognize signs and symptoms of substance abuse disorders, including misuse of prescription medications and legally obtained drugs, including alcohol and nicotine, and the misuse of noxious chemicals. You will learn to apply interventions for clients using denial, projection, and rationalization and will be taught how to identify appropriate referral resources to help clients with substancerelated and addictive disorders live in recovery and achieve optimum wellness.
Objectives:
- Examine the physiological and psychological factors; psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual influences; signs and symptoms; diagnostic studies; and normal and abnormal findings related to substance use and addictive disorders across the life span.
- Utilize the nursing process to develop, implement, and evaluate a client-centered plan of care for clients experiencing substance-related or addictive disorders.
- Recognize the safety needs of clients experiencing intoxication or withdrawal related to substances, including alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids, hallucinogens, or dissociative drugs.
- Utilize effective therapeutic communication with clients experiencing substance-related or addictive disorders.
- Discuss the classifications, therapeutic effects, major adverse effects, client and family education, and nursing considerations of medications used to support safe withdrawal, detoxification, and sobriety maintenance for clients with substance-related disorders.
- Recognize the effective, evidence-based techniques and settings that support recovery for clients with substance-related and addictive disorders.
