Instructions on Assessment
COMPONENT 001 (40%): (INDIVIDUAL) JOB MARKET REPORT
Write a 1,000-word report which critically analyses employment and opportunities within your chosen job market sector.
Important Points + Guidance:
(1) This is an academic essay and should therefore be written entirely in the third person.
(2) To address this assignment task, you will first need to choose and research employment and opportunities in a specific job market sector. We recommend that you choose the specific job market sector you intend to pursue after university, because this will allow you to develop enhanced insights which then feed into Component 003 of the assessment (see page 4). We will signpost you on Blackboard to key resources which will support research into specific job market sectors.
(3) You will need to be very specific about your chosen job market sector. Roles such as ‘Management’ or ‘Business Consultancy’ are too vague and broad. Instead, narrow this down to something more meaningful.
You could focus on a specific industry, such as ‘renewable energy’ or ‘motor manufacturing’, or a specific role, such as ‘Sales Manager,’ or ‘HR Business Partner’; or if you like, be even more specific: ‘Sales Manager in the Renewable Energy sector,’ or ‘HR Business Partner in the motor manufacturing industry.’ Where you are already in employment, give us specific detail on your current or planned job market sector.
(4) In your essay, you should discuss the context of your specific job market sector.
Key aspects you could research and discuss include:
What does this jobs market look like?
What kinds of people work in this sector?
What key challenges do they face?
What does a typical day look like?
What skills and attributes do they need?
For this last question, it will help if you identify a person specification and job description for a ‘typical’ graduate-level role for someone who works in this job market sector, or for the specific job you are aiming for if you are seeking promotion or career transition / change.
(5) Feel free to further contextualise your essay by focusing on a job market sector based in a specific country which is of interest to you. If you choose to be country-specific, you will need to ensure that there is sufficient relevant scholarly sources to support your discussion
(6) Remember, this Component does not specifically focus on you and your career, but on the job market sector in which you either wish to work in, or currently work.
(7) Acceptable scholarly sources to underpin your report include journal articles, textbooks, professional body reports (for example, Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development), graduate research organisation reports (for example, Prospects), government statistics and reports (for example, Office for National Statistics) and good quality newspapers and news websites (for example, The Guardian and BBC News.)
(8) Unsuitable sources include Wikipedia, unsubstantiated blog information, unsubstantiated web page information, and poor-quality news sources (for example tabloid newspapers.) Please do not use them.
(9) You can illustrate your discussion with a small number of charts and tables drawn from the literature. If you decide to incorporate them, they must be included in the body of the essay and correctly labelled (Figure 1,
Figure 2, etc.) They should not be added to your submission as appendices.
(10) See MARKING RUBRIC (page 9) for overall guidance on how we will assess your submission.
(11) Upload your final work to the Turnitin portal labelled Component 001. (Note that Components 002 and 003 are uploaded to different portals.)
