For this essay you will be illustrating and analyzing the subjects of the challenges in getting a college education
and the subject of Inequality.
You will also be writing an opening paragraph that presents general information on the subject and lists the
most important reasons as to why everyone should care about this problem.
You will also write a paragraph on your own position on the issue as it’s been informed by the essays you’ve
read.
Outline:
- Write a short paragraph introducing the general idea of Economic Inequality as it’s explained in either
Krugman, Sklar, or McClelland’s essays. Be sure to quote twice from least one their essays. Then go on to
close the paragraph by noting that many believe that a college education is crucial to lessening this inequality,
but a college degree has become an increasingly difficult thing to obtain due mostly to the cost. This is the
problem you will be examining. - Then write a paragraph explaining Draut’s “Occupy College” argument – what she shows us and what she
argues needs to change. Be sure to do your very best to clearly explain the thesis – the most central concern.
Quote at least three times from the text to show the author’s major points and argumentative focus. - Then write another paragraph explaining DeParle’s “For Poor, Leap to College Often Ends in Hard Fall.” Be
sure to do your very best to clearly explain the thesis – the most central concern. Quote at least three times
from the text to show the author’s major points and argumentative focus. - Finally, you need to analyze the two authors’ arguments and state your own position on the subject. What
aspects of the Draut and DeParle do you feel are the most important? What features of the essay do you relate
with the most? And then finally, what do you think needs to happen in order to make a college education more
obtainable? Try to relate your ideas to those of the authors. ***Also, be sure to include a feature of the recently
posted essay (Week 8) by Berman on College Inequality amid the COVID pandemic. Be sure to quote one
relevant feature from that essay in your discussion of the ideas above. This is the section of the essay where
you can really express your own voice on this so write thoughtfully and well. *Feel free to quote the author
White here as well.
