GLOBAL ISSUES POSTER PRESENTATION & ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

Poster Project Assignment Description and Grading Expectations

GLOBAL ISSUES POSTER PRESENTATION & ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

Course members will identify a particular global issue, dimension of globalization, or global commodity to research in detail.   Course members will also self-select small groups of two to three with like/similar topic ideas to pull together research and collaborate to create a visual poster to present in class.

So, your research will result in:

  • An individually written and submitted annotated bibliography & reflection question responses
  • A collaborative visual poster presentation detailing your collective research findings and analysis of your topic/s. Posters will be presented to the class on our final class meeting.  We will line the classroom with our posters, and while one group member stays with your poster to answer questions and provide information about your topics, the other group member will move around the room visiting peer posters.  When that person has finished, you will swap places.
  • This project is worth 75 points: 60 points for the research, annotated bibliography, analysis & reflection questions; 15 points for the visual poster & participation on presentation day.

This is your chance to really hone in on something that is of specific interest to you and to explore it in more detail!

In the past, students have focused on: sex trafficking, suicide and psychological wellness in Asian youth, child soldiers in Sudan, child rearing in cross-cultural perspective, immigration issues in the US, Syrian refugee crisis, researching global labor practices, sustainable development and poverty alleviation, ethnonationalism, GMO food, indigenous language loss, facets of global climate change, human rights vs culture rights, family planning in the global south, sex tourism in Thailand, comparison of body image and the concept of beauty, local coal controversies, impact of civil war on child development, GAP clothing, transnational gangs, Starbucks Coffee, analysis of work being done by INGOs, changes in food and eating patterns and consumption across cultures, educating for global citizenship, pharmaceuticals for the treatment of AIDS, the diamond industry, ‘world music’, issues of food security, etc.  Your options are quite limitless!

Through your research, you will be seeking to understand the dynamics of your topic from as holistic of a perspective as possible, applying the perspectives, concepts and insights you have gained from the course to your topic choice.  I will be looking for your ability to address how the various forces and dynamics of globalization (economic, political, cultural/social) have shaped the experience of your topic.

Again, each class member will do her/his own research and will compose an individually annotated bibliography and respond to assigned reflection questions, while working collaboratively with their small group to create a visual poster, integrating everyone’s research to visually capture the essence of the topic.

GRADING CRITERIA FOR ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY, ANALYSIS & REFLECTION QUESTIONS (60 POINTS):

An annotated bibliography provides summary and analysis information about each resource, and how it adds to the understanding of your topic.  This process encourages you to think critically about the content of the works you are using, compare and contrast their content, and analyze their relevancy to your topic of choice.  Its the research portion of a research paper without having to write the essay.

For this project, please research, read, analyze and annotate 6 sources.  Popular press as well as scholarly materials are fair game.  Evaluate all sources to ensure they are credible and authoritative.  Do not choose the first 6 sources you come by.  Make sure they are specific for your topic, relevant, important, and will provide you with the information you need.  I will be looking to see a relevant mix of sources, e.g., popular press, journal articles, newspaper articles, online sources, etc.

HOW DO I COMPLETE AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY?

INTRODUCTION: Write a brief introduction (2-3 sentences) noting your group topic choice, and the specific focus of your individual research.

ANNOTATIONS:

For each source please include the following:

  1. Complete bibliographic citation (this is an interdisciplinary course, so I am not picky on citation styles.  Please choose MLA, APA, or other familiar citation style and just stick to it)
  2. Statement of central theme or main idea of source (a couple of sentences)
  3. Summary of the content, message, or position/argument of the source.  Provide an explanation of the main points.  This is where you are demonstrating you have read and comprehend the source. (paragraph)
  4. Analysis of the relevancy of the information to your topic choice.  How did this source inform your perspective on your topic? What does it add to your knowledge base and the depth of your understanding about the topic? (paragraph)

AFTER YOU HAVE WRITTEN YOUR SIX ANNOTATIONS PLEASE RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING ANALYSIS & REFLECTION QUESTIONS:

ANALYSIS:

  1. Pull together all you have learned from your research.  Concisely, clearly and analytically discuss and summarize key findings, providing analysis and important connections. Cite your resources.  (1-2 paragraphs)
  2. Based on your research and perspective gained from the course, what is the relationship between globalization and your chosen topic? How have/do the forces and dynamics of globalization (economic, political, cultural/social) shape your topic?

REFLECTION:

  1. What made you choose this topic and what did you hope to accomplish and/or demonstrate?
  2. In what ways does your project/topic choice and your research connect to practicing global citizenship?

GRADING CRITERIA FOR THE GROUP POSTER PRESENTATION (15 POINTS):
Your aim will be to create a visually appealing poster that captures as much information, analysis and perspective as possible in a visually appealing way.  You will be using your poster as a talking point and reference during our presentation day. Things that will factor into the evaluation of your poster presentation:

  • Poster is information rich, without it being cluttered.
  • Demonstrates analysis of resources, integrating together all group member’s contributions
  • Use colors and patterns that enhance readability
  • Font sizes/variations facilitate the organization, presentation, and readability of the research/analysis
  • Graphics (e.g., tables, figures, images etc.) are engaging and enhance the text
  • Content is clearly arranged so that the viewer can understand order without narration
  • Check for grammar and spelling errors
  • Include your names!
