Scenario 1 (use this case study scenario to do task 1 and 2 in the next page)
Consider yourself working for an Economic Development agency in the South East in England and your responsibility is to explore the tourism development potentials.
According to Visit Britain, in 2016 there were 19.1 million visits to London, spending £11.9bn. This represents 53% of all inbound visitor spending, with 40% of visitor nights spent in the capital.
The government has recognised the economic significance of the travel and tourism sector in terms of creating employment, contributing to the balance of payments, and stimulating economic growth. However, it also recognises that there is more to be done to engage a wider range of businesses in promoting the United Kingdom’s travel and tourism sector.
It is expected that new markets will open up as the growing wealth of the middle classes in countries such as China and India will want to enjoy visiting abroad. With its history, culture, and a series of major international sporting events due to take place in the next decade, the United Kingdom appears to be in a good position to enjoy a growth in travel and tourism in the next decade.
Today, Britain is facing several challenges in the economic environment after she decided to leave the European Union. It will also have a tremendous impact on the number of European visitors traveling to the UK in the future.

What you must do:
You will need to summarise your findings and recommendations into a report based on the five assignment tasks given below. All your answers should be focused on the case study scenario whenever possible.
Task 1
In order to promote the South of England as a travel and tourism destination, you have been asked to produce a briefing paper for the development officers who will work with travel and tourism businesses to help them promote their activities.
Produce the briefing paper in which you:

  • Explain the key historical developments in the travel and tourism sector in the United Kingdom
  • Explain the structure of the travel and tourism sector in general and the United Kingdom in particular

M1: Demonstrate that you have approached to study and research the structure of the travel and tourism sector in the United Kingdom effectively
Task 2

  • Analyse the function of the national government, government-sponsored bodies (use the UK as an example), and international agencies in promoting travel and tourism to and in the United Kingdom
  • Explain how local and national economic policy influences the success of the travel and tourism sector in the United Kingdom
  • Discuss the implications of political change on the travel and tourism sector in different countries

M2: Relevant theories and techniques are applied in explaining, analysing the function of government and government bodies in the United Kingdom
D1: Conclusion on the significance how the local and national policy influences the success of the travel and tourism sector in the United Kingdom has been drawn through synthesis of ideas of justification
Scenario 2 (use this case study scenario to do task 3 and task 4 in the next page)
London is a major travel and tourism destination for domestic and international visitors and tourism has a series of effects both on the local and the national economy.  There are the direct effects of spending by visitors on travel, accommodation, and visiting attractions.  There are indirect effects as travel services providers. Hotels and visitor attractions purchase goods and services that are essential to the operation of these services.
Then there are induced effects as employees and investors in the travel and tourism sector spend their incomes.  The multiplier effect is significant.  The capital infrastructure needs to be developed to accommodate visitors and to provide them with both good services and a positive impression.
There are negative impacts arising out of travel and tourism activities.  These range from additional pollution such as the noise pollution caused to residents under flight paths to airports to overcrowding at transport hubs and the need to improve the infrastructure.  Reliance on travel and tourism carries a risk that should the £stg strengthen then there will be a negative impact on the number of international visitors and their spending if they come from countries that have strengthening currencies.
Increases in employment are usually in jobs where wages and job security are relatively poor. However, both the national government and the London Mayor recognise the importance of travel and tourism to London.  There is a London Tourism Action Plan but not everyone is enthusiastic about tourism as an industry and its consequences for London.
Task 3
You have been asked to produce an account of London’s growing attractiveness as a visitor destination to be published in London Business Today in which you:

  • Explain the factors affecting tourism demand in London
  • Explain how supply has changed to meet the effects of demand for tourism-related products and services in London

M3: Using appropriate methods of communication, put a class presentation together on the factors affecting tourism demand in London and how the supply meets this demand
D2: Plan, organise and manage the substantial investigation into the factors affecting tourism and how the supply meet demand in London
Task 4

  • Evaluate the main positive and negative economic, environmental and social impacts of tourism on London and the surrounding areas
  • Explain strategies that can be used to minimise the negative tourism impacts while maximising the positive tourism impacts on London and the surrounding areas

D3: Apply creative thinking in problem-solving of how to minimise the negative tourism impacts while maximising the positive tourism impacts on London
