Assignment Context
Application of Fourier’s Law of heat conductivity to determine the heat flow rate, Q. through any solid material and the investigation of the use of composite structures including the use of insulated walls, roofs and floor to reduce heat loss.

Fourier’s Law of Thermal Conduction states that the rate of heat transfer through a material is proportional to the negative gradient in the temperature and to the area, at right angles to that gradient, through which the heat flows
Assignment Description
It is proposed to design and build a new format CFBT training facility using insulated, composite walls and roof construction on a 150mm concrete floor slab. The walls and roof are to be constructed of suitable composite construction to minimise heat loss from the compartment, maximising the training outcomes whilst reducing the fuel burn to maintain temperatures. Material costs must be kept to a minimum to ensure value for money. Wall and roof thicknesses are limited to 150mm. It is envisaged to maintain an inside temperature of 200oC inside the container. Average Irish outside temperature can be taken as 8oC.
Students are requested to choose suitable materials to construct the walls and roof and Using Fourier’s Law, calculate the heat loss from a CFBT training compartment. See figures 1 and 2 below.

Penalties for late submission
Where no formal extension has been granted assignments received at any time after the submission date may be graded, but a penalty applies, as follows:
a) Assignments submitted at any time up to one week after the due date to have the mark awarded to them reduced by 10 per cent (for example, from
57% to 47%);
b) Assignments submitted more than one week but up to two weeks after the due date to have the mark reduced by 20 per cent (for example, from
87% to 67%);
c) Assignments received more than two weeks after the due date shall not be accepted. In this event, the learner shall receive a grade of 0.
