Organisational and Societal Cybersecurity Assignment 2026 | UCC
Design and Simulation of Social Engineering Attacks (20 Marks)
In this section, you will move beyond theoretical understanding to design, execute, and critically analyse two distinct forms of social engineering in a controlled, ethical, and isolated laboratory environment.
Your core objective is to gain first-hand, applied knowledge of the attacker’s perspective to build more effective defences.
The assessment comprises two parallel simulations
first, you will design and deploy a targeted phishing email campaign using a sanctioned toolset i.e. the Social-Engineer Toolkit – SEToolkit to craft a credible lure, host a simulated malicious payload, and gather metrics on engagement and “click-through” rates within the closed lab network. Second, you will develop and perform a pretexting-based vishing (voice phishing) simulation, role-playing a scenario such as an IT helpdesk operator to execute a scripted call aimed at eliciting sensitive information or triggering a specific action from a “target” (a consenting participant).
Your primary deliverable will be a consolidated technical report detailing your methodological setup, the specific attack vectors and psychological principles leveraged, and a robust set of evidence-based technical and procedural countermeasures.
Evaluation will be based on the technical realism and sophistication of your attack executions, the depth of your analysis regarding the human factors and cognitive biases exploited, the practicality and innovation of your proposed mitigations, and the maturity and comprehensiveness of your ethical reasoning.
Deliverables
1. A comprehensive technical report documenting SE approach and success click-through rates (well formatted in a report format/style with relevant referencing)
2. The report should include the script for vishing and a vishing pre-recorded simulation
3. A live demonstration of the SE and vishing simulation in class.
