Topic : The World Economic Forum discussed its “Great Reset” at the Davos forum in January 2021. If you had the power to reset the global economy, would you? If so, what would it look like? Or would you only change some things? If you wouldn’t change anything, why not?
Thesis
• A proposition or position argument (the paper is not an informative report)
• Writers should be contributing to or engaging in the debate or conversation, not simply reporting on it
• The thesis should arise from a substantive research question (an open question) so that the process of writing engages the writer in inquiry and discovery
Sources
• Sources actually cited: 8-10, but this is highly dependent upon the thesis of the paper
• Sources consulted, but not cited, should be listed separately
• Research must be broader than the cited sources—hence the need for a “sources consulted” list
• Sources should be largely scholarly, peer-reviewed, or otherwise clearly expert
• The nature and purpose of source material should be identified: sources may provide illustrations or examples, popular views, or expert contributions to the arguments—the paper must demonstrate awareness of these purposes
• Any consistent citation method is acceptable
Argument
• The argument must engage with and synthesize the ideas present in the main sources, not simply refer to them in passing or extract tidbits from them
• The paper must use a variety of argumentative approaches, e.g., logos, ethos, and pathos
• The paper must reveal the range of arguments or alternatives to the proposition
• The paper must engage in refutation of opposing or alternative arguments
