Everyday Data Analysis
Assignment 1:
Excel How-To Guide:
This Excel assignment represents 40% of the overall course grade. The goal of this assignment is to demonstrate how to use Microsoft Excel for everyday data tasks.
Instructions
This is an exploratory assignment. You are required to select a dataset of your choice and perform a data analysis using Excel. Select a dataset that interests you from any reliable source, such as Kaggle. You may also use a dataset from your own work. You have some freedom in choosing how you will approach the analysis. But you will be expected to demonstrate your understanding of Excel tools and functions to explore, clean, transform, analyse, and visualise your data.
Explore the data – Use Excel tools and functions to explore the dataset and gain a good understanding of its structure, content, and quality. Identify any missing or inconsistent data, and decide how to handle them.
Clean the data – Clean and pre-process the data as necessary to ensure its accuracy, consistency, and completeness. Use Excel functions and tools to manipulate and transform the data to make it ready for analysis.
Transform the data – manipulating the original dataset in a way that changes its format, structure, or content to make it more suitable for analysis.
Analyse the data – Apply appropriate Excel functions and tools to analyse the data and answer questions or hypotheses. Use charts, graphs, tables, and other visual aids to present your findings.
Visualise and draw conclusions – Use visuals, such as charts and word clouds etc., to present your data. Draw conclusions from your analysis and explain what the data tells you. Discuss any limitations or uncertainties in your analysis as appropriate.
You should submit two files – an Excel workbook and a Word document. The Excel workbook can contain several worksheets as needed to do your analysis. The format and structure is up to you in terms of how many worksheets you create, label etc. 2 The Word document should contain an overview of your project, from the initial idea and where you sourced your dataset, to the approach you took in exploring, cleaning, analysing, and visualising the data, and finally through to your conclusions and what you learned from this project. As with the Excel document, the Word document can be structured in any way you wish. This is an authentic assessment, so treat the assignment as if it were a real-world task. Use screenshots from Excel to illustrate as appropriate.

Assignment 2:
Project How-To Guide The Written Assignment represents 60% of the overall course grade.
Instructions
This assignment should be completed at the conclusion of the course, once all sessions have been completed. The submission date is approximately two weeks after the final session of the course; please check the course details for the exact date. The goal of the assignment is to demonstrate how you are thinking about applying course concepts to demonstrate the course learning outcomes:
- Identify common issues with data, and rectify simple problems such as wrong data types and missing data
- Apply basic statistical concepts to derive insights from everyday data tasks
- Use Tableau, Power BI to perform simple data clean-up, visualisations and dashboards
- Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate results using storytelling or any other technique.
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of how to create Dashboards and reports using Business Intelligence tools
- Demonstrate clear understanding of Data Modelling and Data Importing Details
You must create a Dashboard on a real-world case using any of the tools that were presented during the course. The Dashboard should apply the processes from Data importing, Data Modelling, Data processing, Statistical analysis, Visualisation and Storytelling. There are no limitations on the number of charts/reports you generate or the type of data that you use.
Your data can range from various different domains such as Entertainment/Sales/Business/Marketing/Finance etc.
Please submit two files: 1. The project , 2. A report that should be around 800-1000 words excluding references.
IMPORTANT:
 1. If you are using Tableau for your final assignment, you must submit a TWBX file format, in addition to the report. A TWB file is not acceptable as it does NOT include the data in the dashboard, and may not be gradable.
1.2. For Power BI, the equivalent of Tableau`s TWBX file format is the PBIX file format. A PBIX file in Power BI includes the reports and visualisations, the data models, queries, and embedded data, ensuring that everything necessary for grading the dashboard project is self-contained within a single file.
You must also provide the report file as well. Important: after you submit the files (report + either TWBX or PBIX file), you may receive an error message related to the supported file type (example below).
The error message comes from our plagiarism detection software, Turnitin. This is an expected response as it cannot always clearly read the type of file that is required for this assessment.
