1. Blakely’s book is essentially a long-form critique of the use of social science in public discourse. How does Blakely think social science is used in American society? What are the valid uses of social science for Blakely? What are the invalid uses of social science (a much bigger issue for him)? How does a faulty use of social science affect American society? What is the solution to this problem, according to Blakely? In other words, what is the appropriate approach to understanding social and political culture from Blakely’s perspective? Finally, is Blakely correct in both his interpretation of social science in American society and his prescription for improving our approach to cultural and political problems? Why or why not?

2. Hayek is constructing a critique of socialism/collectivism in The Road to Serfdom. How does Hayek conceive of the differences between liberalism and socialism? Why has the West (basically Europe and America) begun to move away from liberalism toward socialism? What is the role of equality in socialism and democracy? Hayek’s approach to critiquing socialism in comparison to liberalism is to discuss means and ends. How do means and ends help get at the significant differences between the two economic/political theories? And how does Hayek think about the relationship between socialism and democracy? Conclude by assessing Hayek’s theory thus far (through ch. 7). Is Hayek right about liberalism and socialism? Why or why not?
