A critical account of how you engaged in caring for and supporting a person with complex needs who was in your care and their carers.
1. Define what a complex need is in the context of mental health diagnosis. What is the meaning of THESIS ANTITHESIS and SYNTHESIS in respect of caring for patients with complex needs and their carers? Why do nurses need to consider this? Think dominant discourse and model that are used in mental health nursing and psychiatry.
2. Identify a patient with a diagnosis of Schizophrenia/Psychosis
3. What is the THESIS position which informs the treatment of the person with the chosen diagnosis and complex need and their carers in respect of identifying and summarising:
• The diagnostic category (see and identify ICD 10 /DSMV criteria)
• The guidelines for treatment (see and identify the treatment pathway/algorithm for your chosen condition/complex need use NICE GUIDELINES)
• The contemporary nursing narrative for the treatment of your chosen labelled condition/complex need (see and refer to your chosen nursing textbook i.e. for Barker above see: Section 4 Specific Needs for Nursing
4. Critique Part 1 the THESIS based on your knowledge of Nursing the person labelled with the diagnosis and complex need and carers. Following the guidelines what is the most common part of the guidance which is implemented then contrast this with what is least implemented and why might this be?
5. Critique Part 2 Consider the ANTITHESIS how could the THESIS be improved by adopting or augmenting additional strategies models interventions. Go to the suggested links and explore alternative viewpoints on your chosen person labelled with the diagnosis and complex needs and carers. What is the difference between your reading of the THESIS is their care missing from the ANTITHESIS position?
6. Thinking of the analogy of “not throwing the baby out with the bathwater” What parts of the THESIS would you keep for your chosen person labelled diagnosis and complex needs and their carers and what parts would you get rid of? Provide an explanation. Similarly, what parts of the ANTITHESIS would you adopt to your chosen person’s labelled diagnosis and complex needs and their carers? Provide an explanation.
7. Based on 4 5 6 and 7 what would your SYNTHESIS be for your chosen person’s labelled diagnosis and complex needs? Provide an explanation.
