Read the selection entitled, “Report of the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders (1968″, which was commissioned in reaction to the riots in many large cities such as Detroit, Michigan and Newark, New Jersey in 1967. The members were asked by President Lyndon B. Johnson to answer the following questions: What happened?, Why did it happen? and What can be don to prevent it from happening again?
Currently, the United States is still struggling with many of the issues that caused these riot, but what are we doing to try the third question of, What can be done to prevent it from happening again?”.
Using current literature, research and other sources you may have at your disposal, provide an analysis of where our country is in resolving the problems that caused the 1967 riots. More importantly, what would you suggest as a solution to any one, or more, of the issues that remain unresolved in our current national culture?
