sources to be used are found at the bottom titled “works cited” Part I Identify the Primary Source 1. Is this your textual primary source or song primary source? If you chose a primary source from a website, what is the name of the website where the primary source was found? Include a link to the website. If you chose a primary source from class, what week and class is the primary source from? 2. What is the name of the primary source? (What is the title of the source on the website/document?) Observe 3. What type of source is this? (letter, pamphlet, speech, newspaper article, etc.) 4. Who is the author of this source? 5. When was this source produced? Where was this source produced? 6. What is the content of the primary source? (What does the source say? Summarize what is written in the source in your own words. Pick out the main points and supporting ideas. Include at least one quote from the text. Imagine you are explaining what this source says to someone who didn’t read it.) Reflect 7. Place the source in context – what was going on at the time the source was created? How is this source connected to these events? How does this source relate to a topic we learned in class? (Use the Course Content/PowerPoint PDFs to answer this question) 8. Why was this source produced? (Why do you think the author wrote this source? What was their goal? Were they trying to change something? Were they trying to make a point? Why do you think they were trying to share their ideas?) 9. What does this source tell us about the author, their society and their perspectives? (For instance, was their perspective influenced by something? Can you tell if they have certain feelings about a subject based on what they wrote or how they wrote it?) Question 10. Think critically about the source. What additional questions does this source raise? (Avoid “Google-able” questions – in other words, avoid questions that ask how old the author is or where they’re from or if they have children. Try to get deeper than these types of questions.) Part II 11. How are your textual primary source and song primary source related to one another? Be specific. Think beyond the topic they are related to (in other words, your answer should not simply state that they are both about WWII. Instead, what specifically about WWII are the sources describing?). Use specific examples from each source to support your answer. 12. What can we learn about this topic and time period from analyzing these primary sources? Use specific examples from each source to support your answer. 13. Choose one line from the song primary source that illustrates something discussed in the textual primary source and in our HIST 282 class. Explain what the line in the song means and explain how it relates to the textual primary source and our HIST 282 class. 14. How does analyzing both of these primary sources help you think differently about each source? In other words, how does your analysis of the song help you analyze the textual primary source differently? And how does your analysis of the text help you analyze the song primary source differently? Use specific examples from each source to support your answer. Works Cited Coombs, Frank, et al.
