MSc Individual Research Project Proposal Form School of Engineering 2020/21 Project Title: Design of Synchronizing Device for Parallel Generators. The synchronization of generators in parallel arises as a need to supply large demands of power that would be impossible to supply with a single generator. An AC generator cannot deliver power to an electrical grid unless it is running at the same frequency as the network. This project focuses on the synchronization of the two parallel generators using a device called synchroscope. Synchronizing of parallel generators should be treated with care. Poor synchronization can damage and cause disturbances to the power system. For synchronization, the speed(frequency), phase and voltage of the isolated generator must be closely matched to the system. The proposed project uses two permanent electromagnet generators (PMG) driven by DC motors via a flexible coupling. The complete system comprises a base board upon which is mounted 2 motor/generator PCB , a synchroscope PCB and either a dual 4 line LCD display or a windows tablet or PC running the synchroscope display software (SDS). The aim of the project is to increase the functionality of the synchronising system in addition to adding loads to the generators. Project Deliverables When completing this section, please ensure that clear indications are given of what you expect from the student to successfully complete the project. Two or three deliverables are required. Assessments are not deliverables and should not be included here. If ethics approval is required, this should be one of the deliverables. The following deliverable are expected: Research on the synchronisation of two generators.Explore different methods and requirements for synchronisation of two generators including the synchroscope device.Design a small-scale model for synchronisation of two generators capable of automating the synchronisation of the two generators using software platform such as Matlab/Simulink or Proteus.Design and build a small-scale test rig depending on whether campus will be open for practical aspects of the project.Design a display system to show the relevant quantities such as frequency, voltage and power.Proving the functionality of the synchronising system when load is added to the generators.
