“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Romeo and Juliet” Were written at about the same time compare and contrast the love relationships in the two plays.

More details;

Well, since you’ve asked the question I guess you’ve been struck by similarities. Both plays are about the delights and dangers of young love that is conducted in defiance of parental wishes. Therefore in both plays the rebellion of youth against age is a catalyst for the plot. Both plays to some extent celebrate romantic love. In the West most of us now take the desirability of romantic love for granted.

However, romance means following your feelings rather than your parents’ wishes when it comes to choosing a partner. In both plays romantic love is celebrated in some beautiful poetry but also heads towards tragedy, a destination that is actually reached in R&J. In MND tragedy is threatened by the violence the young people threaten each other with. Neither play does paternal authority come out well.

Capulet hurls violent abuse at Juliet when she refuses to accept his choice of husband. In MND Hermia’s father is presented as a ridiculous bully when he insists that Hernia marries his choice, Demetrius. Both plays present, celebrate and offer a cautionary note on Romantic Love.
