The game is strategic in nature and is based upon a globalbusiness engaged in the manufacture and sale of athletic footwear. Student teams (orcompanies) compete against each other for a predetermined pattern of market demand. Yourtutor is responsible for overseeing the operation of the game and establishes many of theexternalities which will shape company decision-making (such as exchange rates, materialprices and shipping costs).The game requires the input of yearly business decisions, such as volumes of goods tomanufacture, shipment volumes, pricing levels and advertising spend. These decisions arecollectively processed on an on-line server program, and the game then rolls on to anotheryear’s play. Scores based on a number of performance metrics (for example, profit, marketshare, capitalisation, sales volume) are determined, resulting in the teams moving up or down aleague table. The BSG can be run over a sustained series of decision periods (simulated years).You are participating in the business simulation, where you are expected to create/makedecisions on a weekly basis, for a firm within an industry (the firm numbers will be allocatedby the tutor, but you will self-select the group members to work with – the size of the groupmembership will depend on the actual number of participants in the game).TaskYou are required to play six rounds of the game, each round representing one year:• ANALYSE the outcomes of the decisions made in each round of the game• REFLECT on the results of the decisions• RE-FORMULATE strategies for your organisation based on the REFLECTION, forthe duration of the simulationCREATEBRIEFING PHASEANALYSEREFLECT/REFORMULATEDEBRIEFING PHASEDECIDE3PARTICIPATION PHASEThere will be a briefing and debriefing session before and after each round of the simulation.Marking Guide• The BSG assesses your decision-making efficacy during your participation in thesimulation.• The overall group grade is automatically generated by the Business Game Simulationitself.• The overall grade is based on the group’s Investor Expectation Score translated to afinal grade score scaled to a student mark. A scale chart is available on the VLE. Thisgrade, with a 50% weighting, will then contribute to your final overall grade.NB. In addition to the two formal summative assessments, there are formative assessments atevery round of decisions, which will enable you to learn from both errors and positiveexperiences in your decision making.This action learning approach is important in equipping students with practical, applied skillsin management decision making, as well as promoting deeper learning.If you abstain from making decisions and proceed to save the session, in two or more of thedecision rounds, you will be excluded from the simulation.
