Flint, Michigan was once a thriving city due to the booming automotive industry in the area. But in the 80s, the industry consolidated and changed. As a result, layoffs ensued, unemployment numbers rose quickly, and residents moved out to find new jobs, all of which dramatically affected the city, with almost 45% of its residents living below the poverty line as of 2018.
But the most saddening and infuriating event coming out of Flint was the water crisis, where drastic budget cuts in 2014 resulted in poor standards when it came to the water supply and the health of the city’s residents. Families, particularly children, became sick. After an initial investigation, it was determined that the water was severely contaminated, leading to a case that captured the nation’s attention and shined a negative light on a government that purposely sacrificed the health of its residents in exchange for budget relief.
Your assignment is to assume the role of an organization fighting to protect these residents, one which is taking on the local, state, and federal governments and agencies and holding them accountable for their egregious decision.
