Mycorrhizal Reading Assignment Instructions
1. Read the Azcón et al. (2003) article.
2. Write a 2-3 page summary of the article (format: 12 pt Times font, 1” margins, double spaced, page numbers in bottom right corner, no name/date/title/class info/etc at the top of the page). The goal is to highlight the most important information of the article in a condensed format. This summary should include a concise synopsis of the:
a. Purpose of the research
i. Summarize the general purpose of the study
1. Be sure to clearly state what biological phenomenon was the focus of the study ii. Clearly state the study hypothesis
b. Background information for the study
i. Include a statement of what the study organisms were and how they relate (or were
hypothesized to relate) to one another c. Methods
i. Do NOT repeat each detail of the methods. Instead, create a simple explanation of how the research question was examined.
ii. Identify the study’s independent and dependent variables
d. Results
i. Do NOT repeat the statistical details. Instead, give a summary of the trends in the data. 1. Use phrases like ‘differed’, ‘more than’, ‘less than’, ‘was not different from’, or
‘did not differ’ e. Author’s conclusions
i. State whether the results supported the study hypothesis.
ii. Provide a summary of the implications of the research.
3. Keep the tone of your summary neutral.
a. This is a summary only; you should not critique the quality of the article or the research (i.e.,
do not include your opinion).
b. Do not include any first person (“I”) statements
4. You must summarize all information in your own words.
a. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE (i.e. do NOT copy any statement from the article word for word)
b. Do NOT quote from the article. This means you should not copy any statement word for word
from the article and place it in quotation marks.
c. How to avoid plagiarizing the article
i. While reading the article, take notes in your own words.
ii. Write a draft of your summary using your notes. Do not look back to the article while
writing this first draft.
iii. After completing your draft, review the article to see if you left out any important
information. Add any missing information as needed as you revise your paper. Remember to write this additional information in your own words.
