As part of your research you will participate in professional consultation with an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person to establish key aspects of cultural safety for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees in the Australian health care industry.

A group opportunity to do this will be provided in class or at a museum. You may choose to hold the consultation individually with an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person/colleague/s in your own time as well.

This consultation should identify critical issues and cultural factors that influence relationships and service delivery, evaluate the effectiveness of current cultural safety strategies used in their workplace and generate recommended strategies to promote cultural safety for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The consultation can be in person or via digital communication media such as LYNC or SKYPE. If your consultation is conducted at a time where the trainer is not present, you are required to provide a recording of the consultation to the trainer.

Notes taken during your consultation with an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person will be used to assist with your responses for all three assessments (Parts 1, 2 and 3) within this unit.

Scenario

Ms Lowanna Ajabatha is a 40-year-old Wurundjeri woman. Lowanna moved to NSW twenty years ago when she was married, there Lowanna lived until her marriage ended three years ago. Lowanna has no children and she moved back to Melbourne two years ago. Lowanna now resides alone in a two-storey public housing estate. She has a pet cat, named Fluffy. Lowanna’s father is deceased, and her mother, two brothers and one sister now live in Gippsland where they have lived for the last fifteen years. She has two aunties and three uncles along with nephews, nieces and elders residing across metropolitan Melbourne.

Lowanna has been admitted to the surgical ward this afternoon with right upper quadrant abdominal pain with associated nausea. Lowanna has a medical history of hypertension, asthma, appendectomy, hysterectomy and GORD.

You are the Enrolled Nurse allocated to care for Lowanna this afternoon. You are slightly apprehensive to meet Ms Lowanna Ajabatha as you have not had many interactions with an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person in your personal and professional life.
