Describe the historical roots of Police Brutality against African Americans by focusing on the use of violence against African Americans during the periods of Slavery, Jim Crow, and the Civil Rights era, and explain how that contributed to Police Brutality today.
Remember: Your focus must be on the historical examples of violence directed against African Americans by White people “in name of justice.” Once you describe each example, THEN you discuss how it relates to some of the current problems African Americans face today.
Introduction: Briefly discuss how Africans were brought to America as property, with no rights, in order to exploit them, and that determined that violence was an acceptable way to coerce African Americans to work against their will. Then discuss historical examples from each of the three periods: (Slavery, Jim Crow, and the Civil Rights Era) and how that contributed to the current violence used by the police against African Americans.
Historical example of violence used during Slavery:(Begin with slavery, explaining how it established that African Americans had no rights under English law and how violent punishments were used to force African Americans to work and live in bondage, against their will.
Describe the incident or condition, giving examples. (Slave Patrols, Overseer violence, Whippings, Branding, Hanging by thumbs, Caning of feet, even murder.)
