Write a 30 minute presentation using MS PowePoint on the following topic:
Discuss the role of steroids in the management of viral croup (laryngotracheobronchitis). You may choose to discuss the drugs, routes of administration, cost-benefit or any reasonable combination of these. Some discussion of clinical assessment may be appropriate as part of a critical analysis.
Instructions
Your talk should be written as if you were preparing a tutorial for new trainees with little paediatric experience. There should be a maximum of 30 slides, including the opening and closing slides. 5% of the final mark awarded will be deducted for each slide over the 30 slide limit. The purpose of this exercise, and the strict limit on the number of slides, is to help you develop presentation skills and, at the same time, to develop the ability to teach relevant information Photographic images which are used must have permissions appropriate to their use, with a statement to this effect (eg. ‘image retrieved from Google xx/xxx/xxx’; or ‘image used with permission of the guardians …’). Images should be sized with a resolution which minimises the file size (e.g. 800 x600 at 72dpi).
It would be very easy to simply put forward a clinical talk. However, at this stage in the MSc programme we would expect a more in-depth critical analysis of the topic chosen. It may be necessary to identify only one or two areas, and discuss these in depth, to produce a good presentation.
Assessment will cover the following areas:
- The overall appearance and clarity of the slides
- The actual content
- The evidence used to justify the content
- The use of the notes section to identify the delivered content (which should be significantly more detailed than appears on the slide)
We do not recommend using a set of reference slides at the end of the presentation, but to identify references on the slide where they are relevant. An example slide can be found in the Teaching Resources folder.
