For this project, you will take the role of a Diversity & inclusion Analyst for the Sport Diversity
Institute. The first part of your paper should answer the following questions:
Define diversity & discuss the various reasons why it is emphasized within sport
organizations.
Compare and contrast the various methods for studying diversity within sport
administration.
Discuss the basic tenets of prejudice and discrimination and how they inform discussions
of diversity in sport organizations.
Discuss the categorical effects of diversity, including how differences in race, sex,
gender, disability, age, obesity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, and social class
impact individuals within sport organizations.
Analyze the concept of diversity and its impact on YOURSELF and others within sport
and society.
Describe the values and strategies used to improve inclusiveness within sport groups and
sport organizations.
Interpret the equal employment opportunity laws affecting diversity in the workplace for
sport organizations.
The second part of your paper is a report on diversity in a sports organization. You can choose
from the following sports organizations:
National Collegiate Athletic Association
International Olympic Committee
FIFA
International Paralympic Committee
National Football League (Or 1 specific NFL team)
Major League Basketball (Or 1 specific MLB team)
National Basketball Association (Or 1 specific NBA team)
National Hockey League (Or 1 specific NHL team)
A single Division I college athletic department (Ex: Northwester, Gonzaga, Texas, etc.)
Once you select an organization, you need to synthesize information to create a report that covers
the following topics.
What is important to your sports organization
Describe the organization, history of the organization, key information about the
organization, different levels and/or sub-organizations (if applicable), governance
structure.
Who is in charge, what sports do the cover/where do they compete? Who is the
organization funded & what does their budget look like?
Key data & statistics related to the organization.
Then, explain how your organization covers at least 5 of the diversity topics below:
Stereotypes, Prejudices, and Discriminations
Race
Sex & Gender
Age
Mental & Physical Ability
Religious Beliefs
Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity & Gender Expression
Social Class
Organizational Inclusiveness
Interpersonal Inclusiveness
Diversity Training
Finally, answer the following questions within the structure of your essay:
Is the organization you analyzed Diverse? Why/Why Not?
Are things related to diversity in the organization you chose currently getting better,
worse, or staying the same? Explain.
If you were in charge and had the power to improve the diversity for the organization you
researched, what would you do to make it better?
Why would your policies or suggestion improve the organization? Explain?
Other Important Information:
Your essay should always be in a paragraph structure, do not answer questions in a
numbered format.
The cover page and reference page do not count to the 6-8 page total
Not every team or organization will have all the information needed for your paper easily
available online, consider doing some basic research before you select your organization
