Please read the following questions. After reading, please answer all four of the
questions in full. Your answer should use proper
grammar and spelling. While the exam is open book, it is not a research paper and I
expect you to formulate the answers IN YOUR OWN WORDS; the only materials that you
may copy from are the United States Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. VIOLATIONS OF THIS RULE WILL RESULT IN A ZERO ON THE EXAM.
Be aware that some of the questions have multiple parts; be sure to answer each
question fully! While there is no limit on the amount that you may write for each answer,
most complete answers will be at least two double-spaced pages; answers that are
longer than six double-spaced pages may be overthinking the question. Each answer is
worth up to 10 points. You should submit your answer in .PDF, .DOC, or .DOCX format
in the DropBox no later than
1. Explain the four approaches to foreign policy discussed in class.
a. In your answer, be sure to give the basic facts about each school of thought.
b. In your answer, be sure to discuss how each school of thought approaches
relations with other nations and world organizations. Be sure to compare and
contrast each school with the others.
c. Suggest which school of thought (choose only 1, do not say a little bit of this
and a little bit of that!) the United States government ought to adopt in its
response to the increasing hostility, attacks on human rights, and aggressive
expansionism of the Chinese Communist government in the 2020s, and then
explain why you chose that school of thought.
2. Discuss judicial review and the two key cases that created and defined it
(Marbury v. Madison [1803] and Martin v. Hunters Lessee [1816]).
a. In your answer, make sure to define judicial review and explain how it works.
b. In your answer, be sure to discuss the objection that President Jefferson made
to judicial review (re-read Article III of the Constitution if you are unsure of the
answer).
3. Discuss the Second Amendment.
a. Explain the right that is recognized in the Second Amendment.
b. Explain the evolution of the Supreme Courts interpretation of the Second
Amendment, paying particular attention to the District of Columbia v. Heller
(2008) case.
c. According to the crime statistics reported on the FBIs website, the trend in
violent crime since the 1990s is a statistically significant reduction in gun
crimes; that is to say, there are far less gun crimes committed in the
Twenty-First Century than there were in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. With
this trend in mind, explain what you believe would happen if the Second
Amendment were repealed and then defend your belief.
4. Discuss the size, growth, and potential problems with the United States Cabinet.
a. In your answer, be sure to note the size of the original Cabinet, the growth
of the Cabinet over the centuries, and its current composition.
b. Choose and discuss one of the major Cabinet scandals that we mentioned
in class. What are the basic facts of the scandal (who, what, when, where,
and why)? Be sure to mention the problem with the Cabinet that your
chosen scandal reveals.
c. Using what you have learned this semester, offer and explain your
opinion on why the Cabinet has grown so large and what might be done to
remedy the situation.
BONUS (up to 5 points): Consider the following scenario:
You have been a good and faithful employee of Warthogs Mystical Learning
Center for several years now. You were originally hired by Headmaster
Bumblemore Albass, with whom you had a wonderful relationship (he was like a
father). Sadly, Headmaster Allbass has now retired, and was recently replaced
by Morte DVole, widely known to be an arrogant jerk. DVole decides to institute
new guidelines for all employees: they must stand anytime that the Warthogs
school anthem is played. For various reasons, you have a personal objection to
the Warthogs anthem and do not wish to stand when it is played. After first
cautioning you that failure to obey the new policy will result in termination, DVole
fires you after your repeated failures to stand. Warthogs is a private school
that receives no government funding. Were your First Amendment rights
violated? Why or why not? EXPLAIN!!!
