My research topic will be:
Effects of Social Anxiety on Academic Performance
Social anxiety disorder (SAD) also referred to as social phobia is mental health illness where a person has anxiety or fear of interacting with people or peers. Introverted children tend to avoid teachers and fellow students by keeping to themselves a lot. Social phobia is one of the most common mental health conditions in the United States. The reason for social anxiety could be lack of trust, family upbringing, sense of belonging, emotional intelligence, respect and recognition, safety, and among other factors.
I want to study this topic because, like any other mental disorder, social anxiety has been neglected, and not taken seriously. If left untreated it can result in a child becoming isolated, and affect their academic performance, substance abuse, affect job performance, and in some instances, it can lead to constant suicidal thoughts. Studying this topic will assist researchers to learn and understand how it starts, its effects, and effective ways to treat and prevent it.
The common misconception about social anxiety amongst children is many people think that introverted children or individual does not want to interact because they are too proud, or they can control it or, even they are deemed weak. One study on the effects of SAD on high school students, “The Effect of Social Anxiety and Self-Esteem on College Adjustment, Academics, and Retention,” established that there are significant impacts of SAD on students transitioning from high school to college (Nordstrom et al., 2014). The study concluded that the cumulative GPA of students at the end of the semester was affected for students with SAD compared to those without the disorder as well as reported low self-esteem. Additionally, students with high SAD reported more depressive and anxiety symptoms than those with lower or without. The main problem as stated earlier is lack of adequate knowledge and misconception about the condition. Further, there is a tendency of ignoring the disorder especially at an early age, and the consequences might be witnessed even in adulthood.
The main participants for my study would be college students because they are at an age where they can give consent. Specifically, I will provide the surveys to my friends, peers, and others at various universities.
