1. A software provider runs a helpdesk for the benefit of clients. A database is required to record the details of calls to the helpdesk. Create an E-R model to represent the following information about the operation of the helpdesk. The model should include an E-R diagram and a conceptual schema giving details of the entities and relationships in the model.
Clients may make as many calls to the helpdesk as necessary. Each call is handled by a single employee. Some calls relate to one or more tasks, which may already exist or be generated by the call. These tasks are identified by a job number and have a description and status. Other calls are simple requests for information that do not
relate to any task. The model should include an attribute called ‘status’ that distinguishes between the case where a task is new (i.e. generated by the current call) and the case where it already exists.
Clients have a unique reference number, a name and an address. An employee may handle many calls, but not all employees handle calls. Employees have a unique payroll number, a name, an address and a telephone number. Calls are assigned a unique call number. For each call, textual descriptions of the ‘client request’ and ‘action taken’ are entered into the system.
2. An international athletics organisation needs to store very large amounts of information about the participation and performance of athletes in events taking place all over the world. The data will be made available for retrieval by a large number of partner organisations.
(a) Explain why this task might be challenging for a relational database.
(b) Discuss the advantages of using a tabular database for this task. (There is no need to mention properties of tabular databases that are not relevant to the task.)
(c) Assume that the performance data is stored in a single large table in a tabular database. Each row of the table contains all data relating to a specific athlete. What sort of retrieval queries would be made more efficient by vertical partitioning? Explain your answer.
