the difference between positive face, which is typically understood as one’s social reputation, and negative face, which is typically equated with individual autonomy.
This video explains the differences fairly straightforwardly:
Theory is a lens through which we can analyze and interpret experiences and actions. Throughout the semester you will write journal entries that utilize a particular theory in communication to describe and analyze an event, a conversation, or an action that you have either observed firsthand or participated in. Each entry should first describe the event from your life. Next, it should analyze and apply the theory in question to the situation. Finally, you should make an argument for why this theory helps explain how or why the situation unfolded in the manner it did. Each journal entry should be submitted online on Moodle. There will be 5 individual entries (200 total points, 250+ words/journal entry)
For this theory application journal, you should apply Face Negotiation Theory to your own culture. What kind of Face would you say is valued in your culture (however you define it)? How do concerns over Face lead to conflict in your social world or the worlds you observe?
