Task
Exercise 1: Contemporaneous Note-Taking
Using the ‘Western Sydney University – Forensic Science’ contemporaneous note templates provided (available online), watch the video of the crime scene simulation and document how you would document your scene examination.
Notes must be:
• Contemporaneous.
• Concise and accurate.
• Document: Where/When/What/Who.
• Legible, neat, and organised.
Include other note pages when/if required. Attach your completed notes to this worksheet.
Exercise 2: Crime Scene Sketch
Instructions:
1. Use the supplied Western Sydney University Forensic Science contemporaneous notes and sketching page (available online).
2. Sketch the room shown in the crime scene simulation video.
3. Include:
a. Measurements of all windows, doors and large furniture items
b. Scene dimensions
c. Indicate door openings
d. Magnetic north
e. Position of evidence (using only 1 method per item)
f. A ‘not to scale’ declaration
4. Write all procedures in notes.
5. Attach sketch to notes.
Exercise 3: Recording Evidence Locations
This exercise is only for demonstrating that you understand the 2x most common evidence triangulation techniques that can be used in a scene sketch to locate evidence items.
In the boxes provided below (pretend they are mini scene sketches) record the position of any single evidence item found in your scene using two different methods for locating evidence:
• Rectangular Coordinates.
• Linear Triangulation.
Near each box, include a north indicator and label the walls.
Ensure that in your contemporaneous notes that you also include the dimensions of the evidence and evidence item number.
Exercise 4: Crime Scene Photography
Crime scene photography is a permanent record of the scene condition around the time of the incident. It should provide a comprehensive visual narrative of the scene. Photos of the crime scene simulation will be reviewed in the workshop; the following points are considered when documenting a scene.
1. Record any features identifying the location.
2. Quarter the room.
3. Record items of evidence in situ using crime scene photography principles (establishing shot, medium shot and close-up).
Exercise 5: Grid Patterns
A grid pattern has been established on the lawn of the crime scene facility. A simulation video is available online, please watch and then sketch the position of any evidence within the grid and include aspects of their position in relation to the premises. Attach the grid sketch to your notes.

2 What technique is used to determine the physical location of the grid? Explain how the grid would be located.
3 How many items of evidence were present in the grid, and what were they?
