hi there, could you please help rewrite the essay base on the in text comments and requirements?
This assignment asks you to review one of the books on our syllabus (preferably one of the three texts about which you’ve already written). To begin, it’s important to note that book reviews make critical arguments about the value of the text. This is your task: you are to make an argument about the worth (or lack thereof) of one of these texts. What is its value to you? What is your persuasive evidence for this argument about its value?
You can define that value (or lack thereof) in a wide variety of ways: sociological or cultural impact, aesthetic beauty, economic impact, generic influence (as in literary genres), or historical importance. Some of our books, we argued in class, offer interesting and compelling arguments about how to make money, how to spend it, its value, or its lack thereof. Others were bombastic, authentic, ironic, postmodern, and incredibly literary. You may decide that this is why it’s important for others to read the book. It’s really up to you.
One way to begin is to start with the work you’ve already done in making persuasive, critical, literary arguments about the books on our syllabus. Did you realize an important point about how the book was crafted vis-à-vis your in depth close-reading? If so, can you reframe this point so that it speaks more broadly about the worth of the book as a whole? Or, can you provide similar kinds of examples (ie close reading) for a new thesis about the book? Your task then is to revise and expand your previous paper into an argument about the VALUE of the book as a whole. You should have a new thesis that both defines and argues for the book’s value (or lack thereof). Why is it worth reading this text? What is the book’s argument about economic and aesthetic value? Is it the same as yours? Try to answer those questions with focused sensitivity and nuance, as well as with wit and verve with an eye towards convincing someone who likes to read, to write, and to ponder the meaning of things.
If you’re taking on a new work, then you’ll want to continue to hone your skills of persuasive writing. You must offer evidence for your argument; you should also offer SOME plot synthesis, at least of the relevant parts of the text for your thesis. BUT REMEMBER THAT YOU ONLY HAVE 1000 WORDS. For now, imagine your audience as your peers: they’ve read the book (so you don’t need to overly explain or worry about plot spoilers). Such an educated reader will require a deft, pithy summary of key points, but anything more might lose their attention. They will also require evidence to be creatively engaged as well as critically persuaded. (For example, you may argue that the value of a text like More’s Utopia is that it helps us understand dystopias like The Hunger Games or Brave New World. What kind of evidence will you use to make this claim convincingly in 1000 words? What kind of evidence would persuade you?).
