On successful completion of this laboratory module, you should be able to:
- identify various simple circuit components
- use a multimeter to measure resistance of components and connect a multimeter to a circuit and make measurements of current and voltage; and
- predict and verify the resistance, current and voltage in compound circuits containing components in series and parallel.In this experiment you will be using a low-voltage DC power supply. While the hazards posed by this equipment are minimal, accidentally short-circuiting the output could result in the connecting wires becoming extremely hot.Do not switch on the power supply until a demonstrator has checked your circuit.
Part 1: Circuit components and their symbols
- Before learning how to carry out calculations on circuits, it is important to appreciate what various electrical components look like. This exercise is designed to introduce you to some common components and their symbols.
- Before coming to class
- A selection of components is shown below. You also have a colour version of the resistor colour chart (this will help you find the design value of various resistors you use in the lab).
