A client wishes to convert previous office space in an upper storey building to a gallery and reception room. Your consultancy company has been engaged to check whether the existing supporting members will be adequate for the new purpose.
Calculate the compressive capacity (ɸNd.c) using the Australian Standard for one of the columns supporting the reception room, as below:

120mm x 35mm in cross-sectional dimensions
Seasoned machine graded pine – MGP 12
The column is restrained at both ends in position and direction
The column supports both the permanent and short term loads imposed by the floor above
The column is restrained at half height in the minor axis direction only as shown in Figure 1.

Questions 2 – Timber Beam Design (15 marks)
Upon further reflection and given capacity for further growth in the business, the client has decided to construct an entirely new gallery and reception room in Bundaberg.
As shown in Figure 2, the gallery and reception room is to have
A timber floor which is supported by 10 bearers (beams) 300 mm x 75 mm (depth x width).
The bearers selected are of machine graded sawn, seasoned Karri (Strength group SD2, Stress grade F17)
The bearers have a clear span of 2.5m and the ends of the bearers sit on 100 mm wide supports.
The compression flange of the bearers are restrained by joists at 450mm centers (Hint: Lay = 450mm)
The spacing between bearers is 1.8 metres.
The live load applied along the length of the bearer has been calculated to be 9.0kN/m. The dead load applied along the length of the bearer, including self-weight has been calculated to be is 1.5kN/m.
Check the adequacy of the bearers to the requirements of Australian Standards in relation to:
(a) bending strength,
(b) shear strength,
(c) bearing strength, and
(d) limiting deflection [Calculate deflections for (i) short term live load and (ii) combined live and dead load cases]
