Good day everyone,
First I’d like to say hello to everyone in the class. I’m looking forward to working with you all and learning from you. If anyone needs help with anything, please reach out. I’ll do my best to help.
The video I thought was interesting was “What Really Makes a Good Parent”. What I found interesting about this video is that Levitt and Dubner were talking about how parents get into the mindset that taking kids to a bunch of museums or historic places will make them more interested in those places later in life therefore making them a smarter person. I have fallen guilty to this mindset as well. I have taken my son to all sorts of educational settings hoping he will get something out of it. The data they obtained does not support the correlation between parading your kids to all of these educational venues and how intelligent they will be as adults. Their concept of a good parent was simply being who they are as a person without all the extra trips to the museum. Levitt mentioned that by the time you have a kid that most of the choices you’ve already made to be a good parent, you’ve already made them.
I think that Levitt and Dubner try to look at things from a different angle than what society has taught us all our lives or what we have learned from false sources. This may help us do the same in this class as we explore different economical ideas.
In my opinion, I like their abstract thinking. We are so used to just going with the flow or going with what has always been known instead of looking at things or ideas from other angles. I’m not saying I believe that there isn’t value in taking your kid to a museum because I absolutely do but I think their message is that being a good parent is something that comes from within the mind, body and spirit and not because we spent thousands of dollars parading our kids to various places for the purposes of being a good parent.
I am curious to what you all think of this video. It is only a 2 minute video. Check it out and let me know what you all think. Thanks for reading.

WOW! I have to start with that response. I found the video of that 25 year old woman who was a computer programmer discussing how she was so unhappy with her career choice even though she was making a higher than average income at that age. She discussed how that job was so isolated and antisocial due to the fact she was in front of the computer monitor for long periods of time without other human interaction. She then stated she made a career choice that was better suited for her and was much happier with that decision. When the interviewer asked if she was making less money, she surprisingly replied with no. She had apparently quadrupled her income while working less hours, much less hours. She then stated that she was a high end escort (freakanomicsvideos 2011).
The videos seemed very short and without much in defining freakanomics, but more of giving examples and stories. I’m not sure in if these videos will help yet because it is the start of the course and it seems too early to tell, but every piece of information should be beneficial if it pertains to the subject matter.
Levitt and Dubner seem interesting and unorthodox in the way that they use unexpected data and information to get their point or information across. I found it interesting because of the very different way to explain or pass their information to the crowd. Mr. Dubner seems to be a good story teller.
