Question
The European Network on Statelessness has said that there are “serious concerns” that the changes proposed in Clause 9 (deprivation of citizenship) and Clause 10 (stateless minors) of the Nationality and Borders Bill are “contrary to the letter and spirit of international law, will risk increasing statelessness in the UK, and will unnecessarily leave more children in limbo, exposed to the detrimental impacts of growing up without a nationality”.
You work as a researcher for a Member of the UK Parliament, and you have been asked to prepare a 1,000-word briefing which should include discussion on both of the following points;
An explanation of the relevant current law on statelessness.
A critical analysis of the concerns surrounding the proposed changes to the law under the Nationality and Borders Bill, including explanations as to why the government feels that the proposed changes are necessary, as well as any criticism of the government’s position which you think is valid.
