Wk1Ind1: Virtual Team Challenges & Opportunities Paper
Overview and Rationale:
Most of us who have engaged in project work in a professional setting has been part of a virtual team. Maybe not an entirely virtual team, but we have most likely engaged with a team that includes some aspect of virtual work.
Most likely, we have done this without even thinking about it, as the technology we employ on a daily basis allows us to seamlessly engage in this virtual manner. However, it is important for us to consider just what is gained and/or lost by engaging in a virtual manner.
The goal of this class is also to develop leadership, one adapted to a virtual team.
This paper will explore all these considerations.
Course Outcome Connection:
Demonstrate an understanding of the challenges and benefits associated with working and leading a virtual project team
Assignment Instructions:
For this assignment, you are to write a 2-3 pages of content paper answering the following questions:
What are some of the key benefits and challenges associated with working on a virtual team?
Also, on a more personal level, you are to look at yourself and attempt to answer the following questions:
What kind of leader are you?
What leadership attributes and skills do you possess?
What leadership attributes and skills do you need to develop?
In the lecture this week, some of these ideas were presented, but only in an introductory format, those will provide you with a starting point for writing this paper.
In your paper, you will want to consider the impact that it could have on various virtual stakeholders (manager, project team/ colleagues, project sponsors/ senior leadership, customers) as those questions are likely to be asked in some form during a job interview.
Students that show strong and reflective consideration of these issues will be more likely to earn a higher grade.

*Failing to cite the use of outside materials appropriately will result in a loss of credit on the assignment (including a possible failing grade in the course) and a charge filed with the University for Academic Dishonesty.
Grading Notes:
When grading this assignment, I will be looking at the completeness of the assignment by verifying that you have covered all the required areas. I will also be focusing on how well you succinctly cover the key items mentioned above. I will also be making certain that you meet all the formatting guidelines and requirements, such as three peer-reviewed sources. Although following the formatting guidelines will not guarantee an ‘A’ on the assignment, if you do not meet the guidelines, you will not earn an ‘A’, regardless of the quality of the specific content, you submit. An ‘A’ will be assigned to those submissions that do not merely meet the basic assignment guidelines but are exceptionally well written and executed.
