Assignment 1 – Quality Management Plan and Inspection

Assignment 1 – Quality Management Plan and Inspection and Test Plan
(Subject: Quality and Value Management)
Aims and Overview
This assignment aims to provide direct experience in understanding the technical factors involved in developing aspects of a quality management plan, namely:
1. detailed construction design of external waterproofing and paving for a roof terrace including attention to meeting performance, compliance, functional and practical construction requirements
2. creation of an inspection and test plan to inspect the above.
Submission details
• Group assignment: 4 people per group max.
• Weighting: 25% of the entire subject
• Note: half this mark is shared equally across the group;
• Note: the other half is assigned individually to each person in the group whereby each is assigned to lead one of the 4 respective deliverables below; equal marks for all 4 deliverables • Due date: COB: 17/4/2022
Resources provided
• Drawings for a residential dual occupancy building about to be constructed,
• class notes including hyperlinks to relevant documents, web sites and videos
• usage of National Construction Code (freely downloadable by you)
• usage of Australian Standards, accessible via WSU library
The Problem
You are a general contractor and have just been given the drawings for a dual occupancy building that you are about to begin, but the design is little more than a concept design that has been sufficient to get development approval but is well short of detailed design for construction (about 50% complete). View the roof terrace on the attached dual occupancy housing design. In its current version, it is considered to offer a relatively unreliable design; there is little confidence it will meet NCC performance requirements; it will likely leak in terms of water flooding into the Dwelling 1 living area and also flooding into the Dwelling 2 area below (i.e. Bedroom 1/bathroom/laundry areas). This is a high risk to quality so make sure you research it carefully and get it right. Features likely to cause the above problem include:
• There is no step down from the internal living area to the roof terrace.
• There is no detail on:
o what sort of waterproof membrane will be used,
o how the interface between floor tiling and waterproofing occurs, o how the membrane upturns to the parapet/balustrade and also walls bounding the terrace area occur.
• The roof terrace drainage is likely insufficient to allow terrace water to escape and prevent a build up of water in a downpour.
Deliverables
1. Knowing regulatory performance, compliance and system requirements:
o Look up and state NCC performance requirements for the roof terrace – what does it say?
o Determine if any Deemed to Satisfy standards can be used to comply with the NCC performance requirements. State the title of any such Standard and state which parts you will mainly utilise in this assignment
o Choosing material/system to be used: Determine the proprietary materials/membrane system that will best suit the situational needs
2. Creating a detailed design for constructing it: design your preferred system by applying the previous points plus a situational design to suit the roof terrace including attention to falls in the terrace slab, the membrane system, movement joints in the membrane, flexibility of the membrane material, an appropriate pedestal and paver system to be used (refer in-class notes), terrace drainage, and parapet and wall detailing.
3. Drawing it: do the above by providing technical drawings/sketches (including plans and cross-sectional details) and a written specification to show how you intend to apply the above to the roof terrace. You must do this to a standard that would be acceptable for use on a real project. Scaled drawings preferred e.g. scale of 1:20 or 1:50. It should reflect all the detail described in the previous point
4. Creating an Inspection and Test Plan to check it: provide an Inspection and Test Plan for checking the above work once it is constructed onsite. It should be consistent with the NSW Gov’t Quality Management Guideline (where relevant for residential scale work) and your in-class learning and notes. Aim for a 1-2 page ITP. Make sure it includes:
o witness and hold points, o tolerances and target measurements for straightness/flatness, surface, consistency of joint width between pavers etc. o staging of inspections and testing you intend to undertake (including attention to the various subcontractors involved)
o what will be inspected
IMPORTANT:
• USE AN EVIDENCE BASED APPROACH. DO NOT USE LOOSE OPINION AND SALES SPIN OR YOU WILL
LOSE MARKS. CUTTING AND PASTING SHOULD NOT BE USED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
• TRY TO KEEP THE ENTIRE REPORT TO 10-12 PAGES. KEEP TO THE FACTS. BULLET POINTS AND USE
OF WELL SETOUT SUHEADNGS IS PREFERRED. UNNECESSAY PADDING WILL CAUSE LOSS OF MARKS
