By focusing on a specific social issue or problem, write a satirical essay or story, or other written work where you use satirical techniques to advance your position in a biting and humourous way. A wide variety of satirical techniques will covered in course materials and lectures with many references to this assignment being made along the way, so further examples won’t be offered here.
Remember as you proceed, however, that that attack without satire might just be comedy, and satire without humour is just a form of criticism. Any satirical techniques may be used, however be sure to clearly present your points (though avoid writing a direct advocacy argument for your stance). Have fun, though remember that proper writing rules should be followed.
This work should be between 4-5 pages (1000-1250 words) typed and double-spaced in Times New Roman 12 point font. While a title page is required for this assignment, the use of Chicago Manual of Style footnotes or endnotes and a bibliography may not be necessary, but it will be dependent instead on your selected approach.
Alternatively, write a more traditional academic essay that critically examines the effect of satire on a particular social issue or problem. This paper should be between 4-5 pages (excluding title page, references, appendices, and bibliography).
A title page, a bibliography, and Chicago Manual of Style footnotes or endnotes are all required components of this approach to your final paper. This critical examination would be completed in a similar way as the action critique assignment, however, the action, in this case, is satire and the particular assessment will depend on the issue/problem, community/society, and time as context.
