Assessment Description
According to your book, malpractice is a type of negligence. Consider the following situation and state if you think the nurse was negligent or if it was a human error.
The nurse is caring for a client who is on a nasal cannula at 4 liters and the tubing is connected to a flow meter on the wall behind the bed. The client is also receiving breathing treatments using a second flow meter that is also connected to the wall but is turned off when the client is not receiving treatment.
The nurse comes into the room for the first assessment and sees that one of the flowmeters is at 4 liters and assumes all is well. Two hours later the client is having difficulty breathing and the respiratory therapist realizes the nasal cannula is connected to the wrong flow meter. The nurse realizes the client has not received any oxygen for 2 hours.
Is this negligence or human error? Support your answer with references.
