EVR 3013L Ecology of South Florida Lab Worksheet #3 – Pollution in the Sawgrass

EVR 3013L Ecology of South Florida
Lab Worksheet #3 – Pollution in the Sawgrass Everglades
Name Panther ID
Introduction
In this activity you will be
visiting six sampling stations from the 2005 Remap project where you
will be researching data collected for mercury and phosphorus levels. For each
site, you will record the information requested in the worksheet. The
conclusion of the report will involve discussion of results and a summary.
Before you go to
the Remap sites, answer questions from the recorded lecture. From Slide #2
1.
Look up the characteristics of three fish under warning because of high
mercury levels and summarize below. Where do the fish live and what do they eat?
2.
Look up on the Internet to find out how mercury gets into the
Everglades. Why are people concerned
about mercury pollution?
Slide #8 shows presence of
cattails (solid diamond symbol) and sawgrass (open diamond symbol) as the
distance from where a canal from an agricultural zone enters an Everglades
marsh increases (x axis). The Y axis shows the level of total phosphorus at
each location. Using the graph in slide #8, fill in the following information:
Plant community
Total Phosphorus
Distance from canal inflow
Cattails
Mix Cattails/Sawgrass
Sawgrass
What are your conclusions from
this data regarding the relationship between phosphorus and the plant community
found?
From Slide #9
Based on the locations of the six
stations on the map, and the information provided in slide 8 and the rest of
the presentation, which stations would you expect to have the highest and
lowest mercury levels and the highest and lowest phosphorus levels? Use Google
Earth to get another view of the landscape around the Water Conservation Areas.
In the table below I have listed
some chemistry data for the six Remap sites. I have additional items for you to
research and fill in the information.
The Remap site is at Everglades
