The goal of this assignment is to give you a chance to research and express your opinion
about an important topic in infectious disease. The assignment is as follows:
You are a public health advisor for the California Department of Public Health for infectious
disease control. You have been given an assignment to assess the best way to reduce
hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections in California. There are new drugs that work to eliminate
HCV in currently infected patients. You have been asked to evaluate the best use for 20
million dollars of funding in 2022-2023 for reduction of HCV. Your evaluation will help
determine if the money should be spent on
1. Funding for research of developing a possible HCV vaccine. OR
2. Funding for providing free HCV anti-viral drugs to people currently infected. OR
3. Funding for providing more money towards education for preventing HCV transmission.

Part 1—- Background on HCV disease and transmission. 15 pts
Part 2 —- Discussion of prevention versus treatment for HCV infection. 10 pts
Part 3 —- Choice for spending money – pros and cons of the approach YOU think should be prioritized 20 pts
1. Funding for research of developing a possible HCV vaccine. OR
2. Funding for providing free HCV anti-viral drugs to people currently infected. OR
3. Funding for providing more money towards education for preventing HCV transmission.
Part 4 —- Why you did not choose the other two options. 10 pts
Discussions over cost of drugs (cure rate), efficacy of vaccines versus education.
For example: If you choose to spend the $20 million on vaccines, you must give reasons wyy you feel the money would be better spent on vaccines and not drugs to cure HCV or education to identify and or prevent HCV transmission.
Part 5 —– References 5 points (must have 5 or more scientific references)
At least TWO of the references must be from peer-reviewed scientific publications on
PubMed.gov.
