Content Description
(40 points)
p
Select one work of art from your slideshows that you find interesting and describe the content in detail. Think of yourself as a storyteller! Tell the tale of the experience of the artwork. No need to do background research about the work of art, unless you wish. Base the description mostly on what you see in the piece itself.
Content Description (40 points 1/2-1 page)—describe the subject matter and the content that comes through the subject matter
Remember that subject matter is what is happening in the work of art; content is the meaning, message, or feeling that comes through the subject matter. In literature, the subject matter is the plot, whereas content is the theme.
Start with giving an overview of the subject matter, before diving into too many details. Tell us the story!
Remember: Focus on specific details and use adjectives!
Organize your thoughts for clarity and comprehensiveness, but formal essay structure (with complete intro, body, conclusion, etc.) is not required. Just get to the good stuff! Two to three paragraphs of description should suffice.
Please include an image of the work of art under discussion by copying and pasting them from the slideshows into the body of your homework submission.
Questions to ask yourself when analyzing content:
Is the art representational or non-objective?
If it is representational, what and/or who is depicted?
What can we tell about this person or place or situation?
Be specific about details. Are there enough details to begin to tell a story?
What underlying content or themes come through the subject matter?
Is there a lesson to be learned?
Or is it more about mood? How does it make you feel?
If it is non-objective or nonrepresentational, what is happening visually (or perhaps other senses)?
Even totally abstract or nonobjective art has subject matter & content.
Is it splatters, geometric shapes, fuzzy fields of color, biomorphic weirdness, chunks of steel beams, etc.? Be specific; use clear language, not vague generalities!
For non-objective art, people often struggle trying to find meaning or content.
What is the experience of the art?
Does it give the viewer a sense of wonder?
What draws the eye around the work? What keeps you looking at the work?
Is there a mood?
What may the artist have intended someone to feel or sense or when experiencing the work?
The physical sensations of the presence and the perception of the art, that experience is often the content of totally abstract art.
