Here is my personal statement for ideas and I can also attach my resume.
As I pondered the question of why I want to go to medical school, I battled to pinpoint a solitary point or experience in my life that had driven me to decide that this was the path for me. There was no single encounter that I could determine that would completely clarify why I have chosen to be a physician. However, I can provide some insight as to why I strongly believe there is no other path for me. My desire to go to medical school has been impacted by my various victories, disappointments and motivations so far in my life. From each of these, I have learned lessons that will be necessary to succeed as a physician.
Recently, I lost my father to COPD. It has been extremely difficult for me to deal with this loss. I wanted to be able to help my father with this medical condition. Hence, one strong motivation for wanting to become a physician. He was always telling me to follow my dreams. He thought I would have the “right stuff” to make a great doctor. So not only has it become my dream to go to medical school, I trust it will make my father proud as he watches over me in Heaven.
Another experience that has led me to medical school was my medical brigade in Honduras. I had the chance to shadow the gynecologist in the unit. I felt a great desire to help him in any way I could. I was the only student out of 40 that actually provided hands on assistance. Since I am fluent in Spanish, many of the patients requested that I assist them with preparing for the procedure or hold their hand during it. The doctor was exceptionally instructive about each procedure he did and, surprisingly let me assist on several pap smears. Many of the women had cervical cancer and had never seen a specialist. I wanted to be able to do more for these women. I wanted to be able to treat their cancer.
My experience at the UK Chandler emergency clinic also comes to mind. The physician I shadowed actually gave me the opportunity to cut a fallopian tube during the medical procedure. I was so fascinated as she showed me the new innovated procedure being used called the “robot”. I found myself wanting to know more about the various medical procedures, treatment options, and tests performed. And, perhaps I might one day develop a new and innovative technique myself.
It is the summation of all my experiences that has driven me to coherently accept that medical school is the next stage in my life. It is a field that is characterized by hard work and training, continuous learning, and the desire to help people. Medicine gives me the outlet to use these characteristics. It is a calling that aligns with my own desires and love of people. It provides a climate that will cultivate my own development as a person and empower me as a physician.
