According to the American Nurse Association, both natural and man-made disasters can be chaotic, scary, and tragic events. Nurses are better able to cope and help communities recover faster and stronger after a disaster if they are educated and prepared effectively, (ANA,2022). The nursing profession is highly qualified to attend to members of the community in many aspects including physical, psychological, and spiritually that can greatly influence the outcomes of individuals during a disaster. For many diverse communities’ spirituality plays a vital role in the physical well-being for families, (Tillman P, 2011). When disasters arise nurses play integral roles for families by respecting human dignity, support and provide healing atmosphere, show empathy for families sustaining loss of homes and loved ones by empowering them with hope and faith while performing daily acts of service, (minority nurse, 2013). Survivors of disasters often find spiritual resources help them cope positively, hence nurses must foster a community and environment that is safe for members to congregate, including pastors and religious affiliates to connect with. For many families, natural and man-made disasters can mean permanent life changing situations, nurses must stay involved to provide and encourage spiritual support by assess community spiritual needs, identify appropriate spiritual interventions, referrals to chaplain and pastors and when its necessary to provide such care. It is important that nurses are aware of their own spiritual beliefs that will enable them to understand the needs of the families sharing the same beliefs, (Aten, 2019). In the case of hurricane Katrina, Minority populations tend to be hardest hit by disaster, they were the ones less likely to be able to evacuate. feelings of despair and grief from trauma and innocent individuals may cause healthcare providers to seek spiritual and religious healing to restore their faith and guidance and instill hope and faith for these families.
